  I grew up in a family of farmers in Puerto Rico, and spent most of my childhood in my grandfather's farm. It did not take long for me to fall in love with agriculture, but as I grew up I started to understand the challenges and needs Puerto Rican farmers faced on a daily basis; from controlling plant pathogens to lack of accessible educational resources and training. This experience has been fundamental in defining my passion and career goals. Currently, I am a plant pathologist and conservational scientist interested in understanding the diversity of plant-fungal symbioses, and their application for improving plant survival in natural (Earth’s forests) and managed systems (agroecosystems). I am also an educator dedicated to building an inclusive and diverse space in STEM, providing accessible education to underrepresented communities, and contributing to the communication of scientific knowledge. I have 6+ years of experience in plant pathology, agroecology, and mycology; and 4+ years of experience in instructional design models, and development and assessment of STEM curriculums for K-12, outreach education, and adult learning. Throughout my career I have developed projects to increase accessible education and promote representation of underrepresented communities. I am the founder of "Micologia en Ruedas", an outreach project that aims to increase awareness of mycology to Puerto Rican middle- and high-school students through hand-on educational activities. Along those lines, I founded "LatinX Mycelium" an outreach campaign aimed at increasing LatinX representation in the field of mycology, and interaction of students with LatinX leaders. I am the founder of "From the classroom to the farm", an education and training program built for Puerto Rican farmers and extension agents to introduces farmers to basic concepts in plant pathology and disease management via diverse educational activities.
